OCTOBER 26, 2005
A look at the F1 calendar

The Formula 1 calendar has finally be published and although there are some changes, there are some bits of good news as well, notably that the season will not drag on into November as had been discussed, but will end in Brazil on October 22. The bad news is that October is going to be a killer month for jetlag with Japan and China followed by Brazil.

The rest of the calendar is much as expected with the only surprises being Europe being pushed to May 7, before the Spanish GP. This should guarantee a cold time at the Nurburgring. This means that the British Grand Prix has been moved to June 11 to avoid the World Cup and Canada and the United States have been twinned in a logical fashion. As we suggested some time ago France has been given the Bastille Day weekend, which will keep the French happy having been pushed off their original date by the Americans. Thus the United States GP will be on the July 4 holiday weekend and France's race will be on a national holiday as well. This should help attendance figures in both cases. Holding Spa in mid-September will be tempting fate from the weather but that is not unusual.

My big shock was the Indy race, for me that is a big holiday weekend. I can't imagine how cool the US race is going to be when it is held on our country's independence day.

Swap Japan and China

The FIA has announced a change to the 2006 schedule, with the dates for the Japanese and Chinese Grands Prix being swapped. Following the agreement of the FASC (Federation of Automobile Sports of the People's Republic of China) and JAF (Japanese Automobile Federation), and with the approval of the FIA World Motor Sport Council, the Chinese GP will now take place on 1 October 2006, followed by the Japanese GP on 8 October 2006.

It's odd having Brazil last. I loved watching Interlagos at the beginning of the year.

I am very confused by your statement! According to the posted schedule the USGP is going to be on July 2nd?

I am also very surprised to see the Bell decal on Button's helmet.

As the former National Sales Manager of the Motorsports Division of the old Bell Helmets (back in the early 80's) I was hired by the then President (the third owner) to help Bell rebound after being owned by Wynn's International which in my opinion did the same thing for Bell that AMF did while owning Harley-Davidson, that is almost put them out of business by not really understanding the niche market that they were in. That is my humble opinion.

I feel very strongly (in my opinion) that the subsequent owners of Bell Helmets (after the November 1984 sale of the company from Phil Mathews to Terry Lee) is not the same company that it used to be, the company that built their reputation on unsurpassed quality control, and a commitment to manufacturing the finest helmet on the market in my opinion.

Terry Lee on the other hand, stated that his goal was to make Bell Helmets a house hold name by selling the product through what are now known as big box stores. And, it seems as though the present owners in Texas have followed that dream as far as I can tell.

I am not posting this because I am bitter about being axed. I am posting this to share my opinion that people should be aware that the Bell Helmets brand that for thirty years was the epitome of "the best helmet money could buy" is (in my opinion) no longer the same brand (as the production techniques have been changed from hand laid fibreglass to bag molding). In my opinion this technology, which has been around for years, has to do more with profits than improvements in technology. Don't be fooled. The name and logo may be the same, but in my opinion the product is not.

P.S. With that stated: Any helmet including Bell's that have a Snell Memorial Foundation sticker (either SA or M) are amongst the best available in my opinion. I based my previous thoughts on the fact that the "old" Bell products used to "blow away" the Snell standards. That is why at one point, the entire field at the Indy 500 wore Bell Helmets. Because it was the best.
