Its all Philip Morris/ Marlboro. Ferrari couldn't afford to pay Michael Schumacher's salary or Kimi's. Philip Morris owns the space on the entire car, they then sell off space to other sponsors.

You are right. Had they had the performance to match the concept, then the message would have really sunk in.

But kudos to them, it takes a lot of heart and or stupidity to do what they did, to ensure that they were serious about and not merely paying lip service to their motto "blue skies for our children"

The Ferrari formula one team has been sponsored by Marlboro since 1984. Marlboro has been the title sponsor since 1997, although its logo does not currently appear on the team's cars. In September 2005 Ferrari announced they had signed an extension of their sponsorship arrangement with Marlboro (Philip Morris) until 2011. This comes at a time when advertising of tobacco sponsorship has become illegal in the European Union and other major teams have withdrawn from relationships with tobacco companies, for example McLaren have ended their eight year relationship with West. In reporting the deal, F1 Racing magazine judged it to be a "black day" for the sport, putting non-tobacco funded teams at a disadvantage and discouraging other brands from entering a sport still associated with tobacco. The magazine estimates that in the period between 2005 and 2011 Ferrari will receive $1 billion from the agreement.

Also agree that he is a strategic powerhouse, but that alone does not win championships...
If you read this you will know that he is more than just a strategist.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ross_Brawn

He started his way up as a machinist, gradually working up to a aerodynamicist and then onwards to Tech Director, and Team Principal. Not like an Adam Parr or Nick Fry that graduated business school and started working in management but someone that worked his way up by learning the trade from its most basic level. Kinda like Schumacher that worked his way into a driving seat by starting work as a mechanic.

While he may not have designed every single widget in the BGP001, there is no doubt that his technical visions set the development direction for Brawn and Schumi himself has called him the 'Super Brain'. Just as he had the dream team at Ferrari (Jean Todt, Rory Byrne, Schumi), he seems to have assembled a similar team over at Brawn.

You mean they couldn't find any sponsors - just like BGP can't....

Yes - all teams get a slice of the FIA/FOM revenue. That is the other problem with the budget cap.

F1 pulls in revenues of around 2.7B, if there were 10 teams and the revenue cap of 40M/team, that equals 400M. Where does the remaining 2.3B go? Not back into the sport.

This is a big problem since the FIA/FOM add very little to the show, the teams bring everything, so...why should a budget cap be in place when there are revenues available?

Yup sponsor's make up a huge revenue gap, which is exactly why FOTA was concerned about turning F1 into F3. The sponsorship will move away. I don't believe that all the new teams will be here next year as they won't have the $$$ of their own or via sponsorships.

Ok, so you believe everyone at BGP is incompetent and the RB is doing everything. I don't believe that and know that was not the case at Ferrari. As I said, Byrne was responsible for the car designs not Brawn.

Just because MS was a mechanic that does not mean he was a good one. Same for RB being a mechanic/aero person at some point in his career. What we know he is good at is strategy....

At BGP, RB got lucky - the FIA rules were not clear. When the 7 teams asked the FIA about dual difusers, the FIA responded they were illegal. When the difuser 3 came out with them and the team protested, the story changed. Judgement accepted but with no in season testing, it is impossible for the teams to make the jump that it took BGP 1.5 years to achieve and 750M USD....

If the ruling had gone the other way, BGP would be toast...

or they are possibly being very picky about sponsors. Especially when the sponsor decides to grope your driver's girlfriend

But all said and done I'm real happy to see two new teams dominating the grid and would love to see SV crowned champion just as much as I'd like to see JB getting crowned

Ferrari and McL will for sure come back much stronger next season or the season following that and it will be worth the wait. Maybe they'll have SV in one of the red cars.
