F1 GP of Japan Spoiler. . .
I don't have a strong feeling for or against the personalities of either of these guys or teams, but Alonso's performance on the track has really won me over. The guy has raced aggressively all season, but really hasn't made a mistake. He has the skill to race close and fair. When the Renault/Michelin package was on top, he racked up the wins. Even after the mass damper ruling and subsequent dropoff, he was always at or near the top of Michelin runners.
Then look at the rain. Even when Michelin had the advantage in Hungary, FA was up to 3 seconds/lap faster than the next Michelin runner. To me, MS, FA, and KR are an echelon unto themselves. Maybe FA said some things out of frustration, maybe they were taken out of context. Who knows. But on the track he's been the better sportsman when you consider Monaco. These guys have a lot of pressure on them, whoever wins it pretty much deserves it.

Yep, JB was going 1.5 sec a lap faster than FA for several laps, then past him, during pit stop and had 8 sec lead and was gaining..even if FA hadnt DNF'ed JB would have had a big enough gap when he pitted for dries to kick his ass.
Regardless, even if 21 other cars went faster than Sir JB, didnt JB win?????
its all that matters isnt it???

When the rain was coming down hardest and everyone was still on intermediates, Alonso was putting down laps 3 seconds faster than the next Michelin runner. The Bridgestone guys were lucky to keep it on the track at all and honestly MS did a much better job of that than the other Bridgestone guys. As the track dried out JB was indeed faster, so it may have been a case of one having more of a wet setup and the other more for the dry.
As for the overall fast lap chart, keep in mind FA retired early and the conditions got drier throughout the race. FA's wheel fell off on the first lap after he pitted for dry tires. Note he has the earliest fast lap on that chart by 5 laps and the top 3 times were set after lap 65. From my recollection of the race he is probably the only person on that chart who set their fast lap on intermediates, correct me if I'm wrong.
What I meant to say was that he was really booking when it was really wet. For sure it was a combination of car/tire/driver, but you can't do that without a great driver. I didn't mean to say that he had fast lap of the race, and Marco may be right that JB had his number anyway, but we never got to see FA's pace on dry tires.
