Default FIA Decision

The FIA World Motor Sport Council has decided not to impose any penalty on McLaren for possessing confidential Ferrari data.

The governing body said that while there was no doubt that the team's chief designer Mike Coughlan had had access to the leaked information, there was no proof that McLaren had benefited in any way.

But the FIA reserved the right to summon McLaren again if it emerged that the team had made use of the data.

A statement issued by the FIA after the hearing said it would now pursue action against Coughlan and Ferrari engineer Nigel Stepney, the other figure at the centre of the scandal.

The FIA continues to baffle me - it's now okay to have competitive confidential information....

Interesting.

IIRC, when BAR Honda were found to be in breach of the International Sporting Code with their fuel tank, they were banned for three races even though there was no evidence that they benefited. That pretty much ruined the team, IMHO.

Like BE said this spying nonsense is detracting. Ferrari must be really pissed over this outcome.

Such a total disappointment in the FIA. I can't even put it into words. The sport is tightening it's downward spiral quite quickly.

Another example of inconsistency imo...

Very interesting because the FIA admits that McLaren was in breach of article 151c.

So a team's Chief Designer can have full specs on a competitive car and that is now ok, so long as none of it is deployed on your car....

This is exactly what I was thought was going to happen, the FIA only looked at the physical car aspect...not that other info could be used against the team that the info was stolen from (flexifloor, brakes, wingspreaders)....

Bernie pulling the strings.
What would the WC be without McLaren?
Lewis Hamilton pulling in more british interest now.
Was bound to happen.
I wana know...WWED?
What Would Enzo Do?
Pull his cars from the championship until he got his way...I would bet.
Wonder what Luca will do.

I don't think it is favoritism as much as general inconsistency. The FIA doesn't seem to employ logic and precedent in its decisions.
