F1: McLaren Formula One Team Under Investigation for Sabotage ???
Posted by: Admin on Oct 09, 2007 - 11:58 AM
F1's governing body has opened a new investigation into McLaren, amid claims that the Woking based team may have sabotaged Fernando Alonso's car in China, reports on Tuesday said.
At the conclusion of the espionage saga last month, FIA president Max Mosley warned that the Paris body would closely monitor McLaren for signs of retribution against the Spaniard's involvement in providing evidence that ultimately cost the team $100 million and exclusion from the constructors' world championship.
The Spanish newspaper La Nueva Espana claims that Alonso's tyres were extremely over-inflated due to being heated too much prior to the 'Q3' section of qualifying in Shanghai.
"I think they are still investigating," the 26-year-old had told reporters on Sunday, 24 hours after the incident that left him baffled and six tenths slower than his teammate, championship rival and pole-sitter Lewis Hamilton.
Alonso added: "I think the tyre pressures were quite high, more than normal, but I don't know if it was that or another explanation."
La Nueva Espana said the FIA is now investigating the claim.
Meanwhile, it was reported by Italian media that Fernando Alonso on Tuesday travelled to the Modena magistrates office near Ferrari's headquarters to be interviewed as part of the criminal probe into McLaren for allegedly spying.
Ron Dennis and fellow team chiefs were at the Italian grand prix last month served with 'avviso di garanzias' -- formal warnings that they may be charged for sporting fraud, espionage and embezzlement.

What do y'all think? Part of me thinks that RD would prefer seeing Ferrari win than to see Fernando take the #1 to another team with him.
However, I'd love to a similar outcome as in 1988 Suzuka with prost/senna at Brazil.
I gotta tell ya Marco; after reading that quote, you may be correct. I also see WFO Racer's point as well. Rogue mechanics can do a lot of things to undermine a particular driver.
So, what have I learned???? Unless I know someone intimately, I probably don't really know them at all.
I sympathize with Ron since I am a CEO of a fairly sizable company and I know how people tend to attack people in positions of power. But I also know how some of my managers could bend the truth. So, I wonder if we will ever know the truth about this year's happenings?

Is there anyone at McLaren actually working as a team?
Didn't RD claim "we win as a team, we lose as a team" back when the qualifying stunt happened???

I'll have to disagree.
The driver could be an asshole; but there's no way the team wont want to win. Everyone who works in racing does; otherwise, there really is no point working in it. The pay doesn't justify the hours and endless bullshit one goes through in this business. If anyone of you have worked as a crew for any levels of racing, you'll know what I mean.
FA keeps on saying his car's sabotaged by the team; who's to say HE didn't deliberately go slower so he can have something else to bitch about? This whole fiasco works both ways, and I'm surprised no one's think about the fact that the DRIVER can be a culprit as much as the team.
It IS afterall he who decides how fast the car goes. \
