New points system proposal
Extending the math to last season:
Massa 97 Points and 6 wins
Hamilton 98 and 5 wins
Under the system where a race winner is awarded 12 points for a win, Massa would edge out Hamilton by 1 point and would have become world champion. The score would read
Massa - 109
Hamilton - 108
It'd still be a close finish though except that in our forecasted case it'd be the Ferrari garage that would erupt with joy.

That means tomorrow is today...
I doubt whether this will really change the outcome of championships, especially if the lead contenders have the same number of race wins. We will still have controversy regardless of any new system introduced. That said, it sounds like a good idea to award the winner a greater points margin over the runner-up.
Wow, im not sure i like this. I can see an inconsistant driver win a bunch of races, end up around 3rd or 4th in the championship and still win the championship??
The 2009 Formula One World Champion will be the man who wins most races, following rules changes imposed by governing body the FIA. The World Motorsport Council (WMSC) met at Paris headquarters to discuss the changes first suggested by commercial rights holder Bernie Ecclestone.
The Federation accepted the proposal from Formula One Management (FOM), and the driver who wins the most Grands Prix will now become champion, as opposed to the most points. However, as a variation to Ecclestone's idea, no medals will be awarded to drivers. Consistency will remain vital, as points will decide the title in the event of any number of drivers scoring the same amount of race wins.
The scoring system remains the same with 10 points for a win, 8 for second position, 6 for third and 5-4-3-2-1 down to eighth place; the number of points will still decide any position in the standings other than first. The Constructors' championship will remain the same, and will once again by decided by points only.
Contrary to popular belief, with the new race wins system in place, the FIA rejected FOTA's idea of changing the number of points scored for first, second and third to a 12-9-7 system.

I know what ya mean, I have to read this over again and think about it again.
What I do know, is I think yet again the f'ing FIA dropped the ball. There was nothing wrong with the proposed point system change.
I think this is going to cause problems at some point, as in it will be an interpretation, not a straight forward fact.
The current points system will remain in effect to determine the driver's title in the case of a tie, with points also determining the order of the drivers who finish the season behind the overall champion.
And now that I think about it, it does suck, because the manufacturer's championship is going to be stuck in the same old stupid points system, and that clearly does not favor overall wins.
I hate the FiA!
