Went with a few friends to classic Hondas at the dragon a couple of weeks ago - huge turnout and still managed to get some half decent driving in even with all of the traffic.
Spectacular people watching as well, although it is somewhat sad seeing how the dragon has changed with the coming on of social media culture. It was always a place where people made….interesting choices, but there is a clear “being seen just to be seen” vibe that was not present 5-10 years ago. I suppose that just comes with the times.
Either way, the AP2 drove incredibly well and even though I have not touched the alignment I managed to dial out some more understeer with the shocks and my driving style. The car is such a great match to the roads up there and runs like a top.
I also had a chance to hear my CSO exhaust from outside the car and can confidently say it sounds better than my SSM ever did. It really screams up top but is not ridiculously loud. It also carries 0 rasp even with the Toda test pipe. Really a wonderful sound, but I openly wonder if the car is still better suited to a dual exhaust with how low key it looks…
Overall it was a great weekend and was made even better with friends and seeing Mark aka Origin Fab’s car drive flawlessly all weekend after coming out of a multi-year build.
Now onto winter where I need to both tweak the alignment and also try to put on some of the parts I’ve been hoarding.
The RSS looks beautiful!! what seats rails did you use?
Thanks! Recaro Japan has some dedicated rails for the RSS, so I used those.
The dimensions are almost identical to an RS-G, so anything that works with an RS-G should also work for an RSS. I’m pretty positive that the RSS rails just have more adjustment on the side mounts and are otherwise identical to the Recaro JP RS-G rails.
Starting to pursue my winter plans. A friend and I picked up 2 used diffs and got them broken down and ready for a refresh. One of these is an AP2 diff and the other is an AP1, but both will be going into AP2s. As per usual with S2000 diffs, both of these had wrecked pinions.
Since you only live once, both of these will be rebuilt with completely new OEM parts, all the way to the bolts and companion flanges.
I also pulled a few upgrades out of the stash to use as a part of the rebuild:
OEM Mazda 4.3 ring/pinion
Greddy v2 diff cover
ATS solid pinion spacer
OS Giken bearing cap stud bolts
Arvou-spec ATS Carbon LSD
ATS drain plug
All of this is now off to be assembled with the plan to get it back in the car before things warm up. I think the 4.3 will add just enough spice without being obnoxious, and I’m particularly interested to see how the LSD plays out. I have always thought the ATS stuff was really cool and their durability has come a long way since they came out forever ago. Soon-ish we will see!
4.3 and a ATS LSD sounds like a great pairing. The carbon ATS are easy to tune. Just add some friction modifier in certain increments for how you want the LSD to behave. The ASM (USA) guys have it figured out.
both of those seats were so comfortable to sit in. makes me want to spend money on a pair of the passenger seats. absolutely comfortable. great seeing the GA crew!
