Default CHP aims to curb speeders on I-280

The San Jose Mercury News has ran several articles recently on the CHP's increased enforcement along I-280, including the increased use of airplanes and patrols cars and cycles. So be careful out there and don't get caught. The links to the Mercury News articles are:

J.W. Rowe, a retired Sunnyvale resident, said the intensified enforcement is ``long overdue.''

Once in a while, when he has to jump onto Interstate 280 during evening commute traffic, ``I find it pretty scary,'' said Rowe, 75. ``I'm not out there and schooled in it, so I feel pretty intimidated by it. I'm going 75 mph, and they're running me off the road.

``God bless the CHP,'' said Rowe, who hopes they catch a lot of speeders. ``I just hope it isn't me.''

How about getting these old goofs to pass a DMV driver's test every month? God bless the DMV.

Secret AP1.
280 is wide open and very good condition for driving fast but there are times and place for driving cautiously.
I believe I am a good driver (other bay area members have seen me on group drives). No tix or accident in 7 years. However, sometimes I would be "going with the traffic flow" and some impatient SOB in an SUV would be tailgating me. Yes, some people ARE driving too fast on 280.

Well, that stretch of I-280 has long been known as the "most ticketed" freeway around the Bay Area. And people do drive very fast along it (including me). But now the CHP has "turned it up a notch".

S2020, that's true that there are a significant number of ridiculous drivers out there. However, I believe that if driver's familiarized themselves with the ways of the German autobahns, Grandpa Rowe wouldn't be complaining.

Both parties are at fault:

If Grandpa Rowe is more aware of his surroundings and moves over to the right lane when he sees a fast car approaching, there would be no problem. Should he find himself eventually at the slow lane with someone tailgating him, he can feel free to move to the exit only lane and get off the freeway as he is likely not moving with the "flow of traffic."

If impatient, speeding driver would move over to the left to pass or drive faster than the flow of traffic, then he/she would not complain about slow drivers as both the slower driver and him/herself are willing to switch to the appropriate lane to maintain their respective speeds.

It's a self-sustaining system. If the faster driver realizes there is no more left lanes to change to, then it is time to slow down. If the slow driver finds that they are changing into an exit only lane, it is time to get off the freeway or speed up.

It's a big problem in this area. The GD left hand lovers kill me. On the 80 between SF and Sac I find that I travel in the right lane and go faster because the left 2 lanes are plugged up by these loosers.

280 has always been this way, going with the flow can mean 80 mph sometimes...so i only hope as older drivers stop and younger drivers drive that slower will use right and faster left...i europe we would be screaming with only two lanes due to the agreed behavior of drivers, never pass on the right, alwasy more over and let someone else go....i think the average speed is 75 most of the time, so go with it!
