On the 1 - 92 - 84 detour, take Pescadero Creek Road just after La Honda, and drive into Pescadero. Duarte's Tavern is a gem.
There aren't a lot of detours that won't take you all the way back into the interior Bay Area.
After Big Sur, you can turn off Nacimiento-Ferguson Road, and drive back into Fort Hunter Ligget and Mission San Antonio De Padua, but I don't know whether you want to drive all the way from King City back to San Francisco, either.

I'm driving my S2000 back to SF this coming Sunday. My plan is to take the PCH going back to the Bay Area. I've only done this once back in my teenage years and I wasn't even the primary driver then since we were all taking turns on the wheel. So I don't recall exactly what routes at that time we've taken.
Basically, all I wanna do is hit some scenic spots and still make it home early on or before 6 PM. Not planning of doing any stops but for fuel. But if I'm coming from LA do I just really take PCH all the way to SF?! I'll try to avoid major cities along PCH/in LA county such as malibu, venice, santa monica and all.
But where do I start and What time do I start to get back to Daly City on or before 6 PM?
Otherwise.... I'll just take my normal driving route which is the fwy 5, 152 W, and the 101... then I'm back home.
