Lower End & Input Seal Failure
Hey Everyone,
So I had the S out pretty much all day Saturday & when I got home I noticed a faint smell of burning oil. Strange.....well the next morning I had a small puddle of oil on the garage floor and noticed oil dripping from the bottom of where the transmission connects to the engine.
I took it to the dealership and they told me that the lower end & input shaft seal was leaking. They are going to replace it as the car is still under warranty, so I'm thankful for that. That would have been an expensive one because they have to drop the transmission to fix the seal. Honda says that this is highly unusual failure given the age and mileage on the car. (07' with 18500 mi).
Anywho, has anyone had problems with these seals before on their S? What would cause this failure in the first place? Any insights?

Possibly over filling the transmission with fluid or you just got unlucky and got a bad seal.
Just a guess and I haven't heard of this happening with others or at least it isn't a common problem.
BTW are you referring to the transmission input seal because that's what I think you're referring to.
Lower end usually refers to the block and on the block is a front main seal and a rear main seal.
The transmission has an input and output seal.

That leak is also a common occurrence when people spill oil as they are filling the engine back up with oil. It drips right down the back of the engine.
Hopefully you didn't replace a seal that didn't need to be replaced. You should take this as an opportunity to change flywheels or do some mods!!!

I'm also wondering if I should take the opportunity to replace/upgrade any parts such as the clutch..........i'm trying to keep everything stock though. (Yeah, I know. I'm one of those guys).

It could have resulted from overfilling as I had a "30k" mile service done the week prior.

It is not from overfilling... it is from spilling the oil when . Regardless of what happened... get the AP1 flywheel at a minimum!!!
all because someone couldn't get it in the hole.

... that's how I found the problem.
