Default Major Oil Leak

ok, this is not about my s2k, but my prelude. but I figure there are some very experienced/knowledgable mechanics here so here goes:

My 94 prelude was leaking oil like crazy yesterday. So much so, that the engine was completely drained when I got back to the car. There was a long trail of oil coming out of the car and a big pool of oil under the engine. I thought the guys who changed my oil did a bad job or something. I had the car towed to my mechanic and after checking it out, they found that it was not the oil change (filter, drain nut, etc.) that caused the leak, but that a balance shaft boot had popped out. He said its no small job to fix, but it would also require changing the timing belt as well.

I have no idea what a balance shaft is or let alone what damage has been done. Anyone here can explain this to me?

ThankS!

Honda had a recall on Accords for a seal on the balance shafts. I'm not sure if th Preludes also had this recall. You might want to check it out.
