XKCD's tribute is excellent.

I also really like what Panic has done.

The reasons dearest to me: He is the personification of attention to detail, of making technology truly personal, and of instilling artistry in every facet of his (and his teams') products. He cut through the messy world of consumer tech with laser precision, and Apple has been enjoying massive success because of his direction.

Some people care because they like Apple products. Other people care because they realize how blisteringly difficult it is to do what Apple has, and what they will, continue to do. Either way, people should care because the impact he had was massive, regardless of whether or not they use his tech.

He was a visionary, and there aren't that many in this world. At least not many who have the resources and dedication to make something of themselves. Think of the mac back from 2000 and look at the mac we have now in 2011. He made such a leap within 11 years, and it's sad that someone with that intelligence and ability for change and out of the box thinking, is gone.

Plus, on a human level, death is the scary and unavoidable end point in all of our lives and it is sad (or should be) to think that someone reached that and is just...gone. Forever. As humans, sympathy and empathy should kick in.

His impact on your daily life is probably not seen by most people. He's shaped the personal computer, cell phones, computer fonts, consumption of music and movies.

In recent time what single person has had such an impact? I don't think you can name one.

That all said, it's not as if he had a moral high ground and worked all his life feeding the poor. So if that's how you're viewing his passing I could understand your logic.
