Default Looking For Mountain Bike

My last thread got moved. So lets clarify, This isn't a WTB thread, I'm looking for opinions and information on bikes.

So l lets try again.

Well I'm officially fat and it's time to lose weight. I can't really sit on a stationary bike, treadmill or step master, So I was thinking about riding with some of my friends.

Criteria:
I want to spend about $300 (new or used, doesn't matter really).
Mostly ride on paved roads, maybe some dirt here and there.
I'm 5'11" 180 lbs.

what do you guys think?

look at used...
Craigslist
Recycler.com
garage sales

$500 or under new bike will not be the best, just a street rider

the more money you put into the bike fund... quality of the bike get better
lighter bike and easier to ride, smooth shifting while riding uphill

There are GREAT trail here in South OC whiting and Aliso

Look at Rock and Road, specialized

You're 5'8" 180 and you want to gain more weight???? I remember when I was 135 i felt soooooo light, I could run and jump over fences without missing a beat, now I get 50 feet and the paramedics need to be called

I sure there are nice trails Picturepro, but I'm really out of shape to ride any of them, down hill and paved is where I shine! lol

180 in muscle would be ideal for me, but 180 in fat just slooooows me down. I was 135 before, so just gaining weight isn't a good idea, you start to feel heavy.

I'd suggest getting the lightest bike you can afford. I'd maybe skip the suspension unless you need one in Lieu of a carbon fork which weighs less and still absorbs some shock.
