Default 1988 crx help!

If it is hot outside my crx begins to miss after about 15 minutes of driving. If i take it above 3000 rpms after driving for a while it feels like the car wants to die, like the ignition is cutting out. If i open the hood it feels as though there is a MASSIVE amount of excess heat in the engine bay, hwoever operating tempature seems normal. The exhuast manifold is hot to the point where if i check the oil and a drop falls on it it flash boils off of it. If it is cold outside my car runs flawlessly. I am wondering if the heat can cause the ignition system to malfuntion? is there anyway to reduce this heat? Would a old catalitic converter that could be clogged be causeint the exhuast manifold to generate this heat?

I don't think ths will help, but I will share.

My '90 would start and run fine, but if I stopped for gas or to run an errand when I came back to the car it would not start. If I waited 10 to 15 minutes it would be fine and start right up. When I asked the dealer about this they told me to replace the main relay. I did and now the little beast is fine. And let me just say, replacing that main relay was a real PITA!

Good luck!

What do you mean by "operating temperature seems to be normal"? Do you mean the coolant temp gauge stays where it usually does?

I think the most likely possibility is a heat-related electronics failure. Exactly what part is failing, though, I don't know.

i mean the coolant gauges stays right where it always has! engine never goes above that tempature even when being run very hard in hot weather but that engine bay could melt glass i swear!

Well, besides electronics another possibility is fuel boiling in the lines (vapor lock).

But the engine compartment is always very hot right after use, and it will be especially so with the heat wave we are having. Are you SURE it is abnormally hot? What are you comparing it against? Before this happened, how often were you in the habit of popping the hood right after running it hard and hot?

As for the coolant, if the thermostat and cooling fan are working, it should stay at the normal temperature whether or not the engine compartment is hot. And besides, the stock temp gauge is probably not very sensitive.

One thing you could try is to take the hood off, and see if the problem still occurs. That should cool off the engine compartment as much as possible.

$60 to 70

It is up under the dash on the driver's side.

I suspect your issue is different, but replacing main relays on older Hondas in not that unusual, chances are sooner or later you will have to.
