I take this to be early speculation. So I wouldn't be surprised if none of it comes to pass.
I do like the idea of a retractible hardtop. Best of both worlds. But yes, I assume at the cost of weight.
There is something nice about the bare-bones back to basic concept. But at a list price of $24-27K, the Miata LS is getting a little costly.
Last, the 1.8 v6. I suppose it was smoother than a 4? But I wouldn't expect using more cylinders for the same displacement would yield much more torque. Just more hp, if they chose to rev the hell out of it (which they didn't). I sort of liked the MX3, but I too wondered why they bothered with the 6.

for those of you that are miata-bashing... well shame on you. the miata is responsible for the roadster rebirth. so if there was never a miata, then there would never be an s2000.

I love you guys!!!
no really....they need to go in the opposite direction.
they need to make every luxury on the Miata an option.
"Hey, I want you to remove the stereo, PS, PW, AC, PLocks, jack and spare". All I want is the frame, panels and two seats.
I don't think the enthusiast sector will stand for a Mazda version of the SLK. to much of a divergence from that glorious M1 design.

Mazda has made no official announcement on the next gen Miata and MT is notorious for showing drawings of "next gen" cars that turn out to look nothing like the real thing. I like the looks but I doubt that is what it will turn out to look like. As fas as Mazda adding a manually folding hard top and a V6 option... highly doubtful.
