Why did they ever screw up the Gen II?

In the C&D test the V6 car averaged 15mpg! That car combines the utility of a sports car with mpg of an SUV.

That mpg was probably gotten with aggressive test-driving. Car & Driver has also gotten 14.0 @ 101 mph with the coupe.
