Most people cannot tell the difference in performance when they have a passanger vs when they don't, so I doubt most people would care.

Ask any drag racer... every ~100lbs is ~.1 secs, so 400lbs is ~.4 secs, which is quite a bit.

"If you have a car with the same power to weight the lighter car feels better".... how does this make sense? Power/Weight will determine acceleration for the most part. A lighter car wont feel better if they have the same ratio.

I thought I'd be able to tell something when I took out the spare tire, jack and tool kit. I don't know about 22 lbs I think. I drove for a few weeks with them out of the trunk and put them back in b/c I could detect no difference what-so-ever.

It is not that much weight if you're starting at 4,000 lbs...
The SL is 4000 lbs. I assumed the SLK would be significantly lighter than that. Not that it matters for this thread, but being lighter than 4000 would mean a difference of 300-400 lbs would be even more dramatic.

I guess it depends on what you are doing with the car. Most people who buy SLK's and the like probably just floor it on the highway now and again so 300-400 lbs (~8-12%) doesn't make that much difference. Also, if someone is talking about top speed mostly it makes very little difference.
x 100

You only see it in the twisties. But if you're driving in the twisties it makes a BIG difference.

SLK 55 AMG weighs about 3400lb...

The Black Edition is about 3250lb I think.

Thats awesome. I wish more manufacturers start doing that. I guess its extra hard with all the new safety standards and equipment you keep packing into these cars...
In addition to luxury crap that weights a lot.

I remember the 1st time I took my S2000 around the track. The extra power was nice and all, but I still love the feeling my CRX-SiR gave me on track, that car + me + a full tank of gas was something like 2,135 pounds, that's all!

Colin Chapman (Lotus) was a very, very wise man.

I guess you dont miss what you never had. The lightest car I've ever driven is my S2000.
