I think it was ahead of it's time in the tech it included but not in the end product. Ahead of your time isn't always a good thing. GM was ahead of their time with big things like turbos (not really viable until you had computer control), touch screen displays (nice idea, tech in the 80s wasn't good enough for a car), displacement on demand (Cadillac V8-6-4... nuff said), and actually quite a number of other things.

Note, the 3000GT's tech was perhaps better executed than much of what GM did in those examples.
