Default Air Flow

Has anyone removed the center divider on the OEM air box to help increase air flow? I am trying to get better air intake without adding a 3rd party intake. Any advice is welcome. Thanks, JimmyB

Thanks for the info. I did what you suggested and also noticed some improvement. I am thinking about purchasing the Coastal Metals Engine Bay Accessory. It is supposed to direct more cold air into the box without making any changres to it.

Jimmy, I can't really find any info on the coastal metals airflow thingy. It appears as though an Import Develpoment or Spoon Sports CAI would be better, if price weren't an option.

If you get the coastal metals kit, please let us know what you think

Incubus,

I opened the center divider on the OEM air box, removed the air tunnel on the top if the OEM air box and installed the Coastal Metals Engine Bay Accessory. It has helped quite a bit. It would appear that more air and the air that it is getting is cooler. Seemed to get the results at a very low cost, as well as keeping the stock look.

Thanks Jimmy, do you suppose that only modifying the airbox like you described could produce enough gains to make it worth while?

Thanks a lot.

Incubus,

I opened the center divider with a 3"x5" opening and took out the air duct at the top of the air box and vacuumed out the shavings. This took approx. 15min. I used a dremel to cut the opening. I added a K&N Air Filter and the Coastal Metals Engine Bay Accessory. These 2 steps took another 15min and a total cost of around $65.00. It looks stock and yes I have noticed a major improvement. It also helps to minimize water getting into the engine because I have kept the OEM air box.

Thanks a lot. I have a problem with my parents, because they initially payed for the car. I may be forced to replace the airbox with a new one if it's been found modified. That is where the high price would come in. I may just do it and suck it up though.

Another thing you may try to do is cover up the square opening on the opposite side of the airbox. It's on the left side(the car's left) at the bottom of the airbox, I noticed a better sound from the intake. The instructions with the Spoon filter say to cut off that whole box and cover the hole. Duct tape alone won't last too long. I find a piece of cardboard and then some black electrical tape does the trick.

You can always do what I did and go to the market place and advertise for a used OEM air box as a just in case. But by just looking at the engine compartment you can't tell anything was done if you don't add the Coastal Metals Engine Bay Accessory, but you will get some noticeable improvement. Good luck and safe driving.
