A competitor to the FRS/BRZ is not what the next S2000 needs to be. Even now, the S2K is not a competitor to the FRS/BRZ...different cars for different purposes. I would love to see a new S2K, but not one like this. As such, a new S2K won't happen. The market still isn't right for it.

Knowing the current Honda, it will be a "competitor" in weight, mpg, and brand name, not performance. It will probably be a hybrid too.

FR-S/BRZ are essentially an S2000 2+2 coupe sans VTEC. A new S2000 should be, pretty much, a 2-seater FR-S/BRZ *with* VTEC. IMO...

As for the market, these cars are pretty much unnecessary extravagances and design/styling/engineering exercises by automakers. If manufacturers only ever stick to "what the market is right for", expect no cool cars to be produced again. Ever.

I say keep it simple and lightweight, and DO it.

But I don't expect them to, and if they do I don't expect them to get it right. But I'm open to being pleasantly surprised!

I think Honda could get back into the S2000/rwd car on the cheap. Update the F motor (or rotate a K motor) to state of the industry technology that's already in Honda's back pocket like direct injection and cam phasing. This would smooth out the torque curve and increase fuel economy. The could keep the structure, it was already sound and crash tested. They would need a facelift to uglify it like the Crosstour, though

On the contrary, I was in the market for an FRS/BRZ. I couldn't justify buying an FRS/BRZ when it basically boiled down to a slower, non-convertible, more expensive S2000. Sure it has more storage space, but is that really the only thing that makes it not a competitor to the S2000? I guess one being used and another being new doesn't make it a competitor, but only if you're dead set on buying a brand new car.

Instead of an FRS/BRZ in my driveway, as of this weekend, I have an S2000. So it may not be a competitor in your eyes, but for me it was.

Regarding a potential future S2000: If Honda builds a compact RWD two door for less than $30k, it will be a direct competitor to the FRS/BRZ. Period.

I always giggle when I hear about the "success" of the FR-S/BRZ. There was and is pent-up demand for these cars and they are limited in production. Current sales are similar to what Honda had with their CR-Z when it was released. It remains to be seen if these vehicles will sustainably sell over the course of a year or two. We're only two months into their sale so it's hardly time to declare them a "success".
