I would take one over an accord or camry. I think it looks pretty cool. I think their marketing of it is a lil too aggressive considering that it is a car for the main, mainstream.

I drove the Mazda 6 V6 with the 5 speed manumatic. For the money, it is a GREAT car. The Bose sound system is best in class with the mids, highs, lows all separate and clear. Not muddy like some of the Bose systems out.
Now for my seat time experience, the car handled well and the steering was extremely well weighted, not too light yet not too heavy. Turn-ins were quick and responsive. What was that old Mazda slogan.. "It just feels right"? The leather seats on the other hand, are a bit stiff and not bolstered enough on the sides and thigh support areas.
Visibility is excellent, large windows make it easy to do quick lane change manuevers with a glance. Now the autotragic on this car is a little slow to throttle inputs, it does not downshift quite as quickly as I would like. But if you keep it in manu mode, it is probably one of the best trannies out there as there is almost NO delay in the upshifts and downshifts unlike the Lexus E-shift and BMW steptronic.
Overall, it's a great for for about 23-24k fully loaded for the manual shift version, 25k for the auto.
Specs:
160hp inline 4 for the base i models
220hp V6 @ 200lb/ft on the V6 S models

Lookswise, I think it's the best midsize 4dr sedan in its class out there right now. Motorwise, it's going to lose to the Accord and Maxima, though from what I've read it has faster reflexes and better handling than either. I've heard and read nothing but good comments about it as a great overall package (aside from a desire for more power, naturally). I might grab one in the next couple years over an Accord, since Mazda works with a buyer a lot more than Honda tends to do. Either way, I'd definitely give it a shot - great looking, good handling, and reliable. Can't go wrong...

If you can wait until ~March 2003, why not consider the forth coming Acura TSX Type S?
I think these two vehicles will be the closest competitors with the TSX topping my list.

The forthcoming 5-door wagon version (due next Spring) will be unique in the sales segment, and should be more desirable than the Protege 5.

While everyone raggs on the new Accord, I honestly think its awesome Sedan or Coupe. The 6 will look and drive bad in a few years the Accord will still look nice and drive amazing.
