Anyone here have experience with the Porsche early 911s?
I've had the S for almost 2.5 years now and I am starting to look for something different to drive. I am particularily interested to see if any S2k owners here also drive an early 911 (<1974). The early cars were the original 911s using the classic combination of lightweight and low horsepower. Can anyone here describe to me the driving experiences between these 2 cars? Both street and autox/track events? Thanks.

I've never owned one although I have driven a number of them. For some reason I never really warmed to the 911's. That doesn't mean that I don't have a great deal of respect for them because I do but I never enjoyed driving the cars. The cars take a light touch and can snap spin in a heartbeat. Two of my friends even rolled their 911's. I actually enjoyed driving the 912's more than the 911's even though the 912's were short on power. I have driven a few of them in autocrosses also and while a stock ne was more fun than a stock CRX they didn't excite me. The newer cars do excite me but the price is more than I'm willing to pay. If there's any chance that you can afford or even if you can't find a late 80's early 90's C4 and drive it. I love the 911 C4! It's a great car IMO to autocross also.
Please don't take it that I'm knocking the early 911's because they're great cars, they're just not for me.

CG, thanks for the feedback. My motivation for purchasing an early car is 2 fold: 1) for the driving experience and 2) the early cars just have a look to them besides the more expensive 993 bodies. I'm attracted to its history and high resale value even though I only plan to mostly autox and track the car. When you say the early cars would have a tendancy to snap spin in a heartbeat, how does that compare to our car? I would think that the S2k with most of the weight in the middle of the car would be easier to snap the rear end around.
