Automobile recalls getting recockulous?!?!

Is excess litigation making us less free? I mean no way this would ever be a recall anyplace, but the US? or would it? This one seems insane to me. Comments?
I suppose they made the determination that the cost of recall is less than the cost of somebody suing them because they got rear-ended and their unrestrained child got injured.
In the case of the S2000 recall, everybody though it was great. Those pink tail lights were UGLY.

One reason for these "massive" recalls is that the manufacturers are using a lot more of the same parts on different platforms. So, when something goes wrong, it goes wrong on a lot of vehicles. It's not that they're necessarily making worse cars - they're making less bad parts but using those parts in a lot more cars.
Make sense?
