Default Automobile recalls getting recockulous?!?!

DETROIT (Reuters) - General Motors Corp. (NYSE:GM - news) has recalled nearly 1.5 million vehicles in North America, including 946,817 sport utility vehicles, to fix tail lights that could loosen and flicker, the automaker said on Thursday.
Is excess litigation making us less free? I mean no way this would ever be a recall anyplace, but the US? or would it? This one seems insane to me. Comments?

Sounds like a noncompliance recall, not a safety recall. Much like the MY00 S2000s had a recall on their tail lights because they faded. It's "noncompliance" because it doesn't comply with DOT regulations. It's not much difference from GM having to change their cars because they didn't include turn signal bulbs in the first place.

I suppose they made the determination that the cost of recall is less than the cost of somebody suing them because they got rear-ended and their unrestrained child got injured.

In the case of the S2000 recall, everybody though it was great. Those pink tail lights were UGLY.

My favorite recall of late is for Chrysler minivans. There is potential for the radio to short circuit and cause a fire.

One reason for these "massive" recalls is that the manufacturers are using a lot more of the same parts on different platforms. So, when something goes wrong, it goes wrong on a lot of vehicles. It's not that they're necessarily making worse cars - they're making less bad parts but using those parts in a lot more cars.

Make sense?
