an electronic system like the SH-AWD in the RL can ACTIVELY send torque F/R or L/R. The RL can send 70% of total torque to the front or rear, and 100% of the torque going to the rear to one side (RR or RL) and 0% to the other.

In a mechanical system, it is passive. If 50% is sent to one side, the other 50% is on the other, effecively wasted if there is no traction.

I'm not sure how the Evo's works, but it is F/R only (still good, but the front and rear diffs are still passive). Electrical systems are better because there is less wasted horsepower as they can vary the amount of torque sent to one side; passive systems send a set %.
