The 370z is a nice ride, I dont know what everyone is getting on it for about the shifter, I found it to be short enough, good engagement feel, a tad rubbery, but overall I was impressed by it.
I'd take the Z because it's brand new; the M3 for the same price is old and high-mile.

370Z's are nothing special. I'd rather drive a Accord Coupe V6.. On the other hand, E46 M3: I wouldn't want that due to maintanence and reliability. And I really don't like BMW owners.. I have my own stereotypes of BMW owners.. No offense to all you M3 owners but the non M car owners I can't stand..
m3 standard 6spd...
friend had a m3 smg, and it was in the dealership's garage more than his own... he traded it, but he said he wouldn't hesitate to own another, as long as it was stick...

for that same money, i would get a Z4M coupe.
I would say Z4MC, however there were only 1700 imported to the US so finding one with low miles is going to be tough.
The Z4MC is much more rare of an automobile and they still demand a semi high premium.
Maintenence for the E46 M3 isn't that high really, well at least not for me. Some may think its high.
