Can someone steer me in the right direction?

Assassin, I use overpants. No need to change at work, just take 'em off. I'll probably get a one-piece Aerostitch next time just so I never leave the pants at home, as I sometimes do now.

Wow back from the semi-dead!
Great advice! I have my mind set on the new 250r. I'm sure i'm going to get this bike.. Although the Duke looks sexy in it's own way, it's too much for my first bike. I have been reading here and there on sbn and still looking at suits and what not.
I plan to take the MSF this summer too, and then one more time next summer before I make the decision to buy the bike for sure (will decide after first MSF class). Thanks again for all the support/advice!

No offense but your logic is awful. You are saying starting out on a new SS is 'ok' because you managed to ride it home without dying/crashing. Wonder if people buy cars with that logic.
It does relate directly to the person riding but people always think they are the exception (such as your own post). People ALWAYS think THEY can start out on SS's without issues. And those that think that way are those who SPECIFICALLY shouldn't be starting out on SS's.
It might not be until months/years later that you end up regret starting bigger. It might come in the form of not being able to ride fast or crashing terribly. This topic has been beat to death more than any other on the internet.

The same thing goes with bikes. You can either pick it up really easy (smooth and gentle inputs) or you don't (panic and dump the clutch, ect)
Maybe it is because I can evaluate myself, and make the decision that I can ride the bike home safely.
If he gets a 250, I can almost guarantee you he will want something bigger within 2 months.
Now with a 600, you can be happy with that for a long, long time.

The "HOT" bikes on the ferry commute in my area are the Rebel, Ninja 250R, DR200SE, and the VSTAR250 (not too many Yami dual sports, but some).
I think just about every one of them are 50MPG+ and I don't hear one complaint from any of the owners.

So going back to my original question about gear.
If I can afford it (which I won't buy a bike until I can), should I just get the best I can? i.e. $1000 dainese leathers, $400 helmet, $250 boots, $100 gloves.. so on and so forth. Because I know that there ARE cheaper brands, but is it worth the price? I am aware of the theory "you get what you pay for".. but just asking those who ride, and have used different types of leathers..
thanks,
Aaron

Anyways, I'm more in to protecting myself the best way possible then fashion. If you can tell me of suits that are $500 and protect just as well as Dainese and Alpinestars $800-1000 suits, I would greatly appreciate it
