I think what Chris S is implying is that your priorities change as you get older. At 22, alot of us were more focused on things like cars, chicks, ect.
Let me tell you, as you get older, priorities change. Your family, your house, your retirements, investments mean a WHOLE LOT more than 2-5k in mods to your car. And because of these changes in priorities, its often just alot easier to buy a car the way you want it instead of worrying about modding it to the point where you want the car in the first place...

Nowadays, if I have $500 or $1k laying around, I could blow it on something stupid for my car, or I could put it towards working on my house, where it will get me back something someday. To say nothing of keeping my wife happy; do I want to but a $1k new exhaust for a car that already has an exhaust, or do I want to, say, do a bunch of landscaping that will make my house look nicer, worth more, and my wife happier? Ricer math says I should buy the exhaust to make sure the car I drive to work does a faster 1/4 mile, but all other logic says don't waste your money.
Finally, thanks for your service, but I was a Navy Supply Officer for a few years, so don't act all hardcore about serving to me. You're still coming in here with the mentality of a 18 y/o bench racer who thinks that 5 more horsepower is going to mean jack shit in the real world. See what happens when you don't make muster because your modified rice rocket didn't start in the AM. Or how much respect you get at work with your fart can blaring in the parking lot.

I've always gone in with the mentality of buying what you like instead of something else and then modding it to hell to make it something you like.
