The Cayenne has AWD M3 doesn't. Other than that both have V8 400+hp 6-MT, both are proported to have some luxury as well as sport.

I do not tow anything (in 8 years with a SUV it was never used to tow anything)

So for me it's one car or another both are V8 luxury/sporty cars. The Cayenne happens to cost more and is a slower, and less sportyl.

I will grant you it's AWD so it's better in conditions but the M3 is OK to drive in rain and in my area 99% of the time streets are plowed. So yes 1% of the time the Cayenne would be better as it's AWD and higher clearance but I'd be giving up the M3 which is better in all other areas 99% of the time for that one just in case 1%

The Cayenne is not a huge SUV, it's not a MDX or Surburban it's probably similar to a FX45.
Well, that comparison is up to you. Most people don't make that comparison. It's an SUV, and the comparison will be to the BMW X5, Audi Q7, MBZ ML, Range Rover, etc.

As an SUV it has better space in it's rear seats, and far more trunk space, driving position is higher, etc. to be compared to an M3 Sedan. For you they might be a similar comparison, but for most it isn't anywhere close to the same. Even the MDX is a far better comparison

Given Cayenne is AWD, it still has performance tires on them.

On snow or ice, those tires will probably work as well as a M3 even though it is AWD.
Absolutely. Without winters or at least all seasons, the Cayenne with its performance Pirellis is a complete embarrassment in snow.

Coincidentally when I got home tonight, Porsche showed off its advertising budget. They sent an 80% scale, metal, street sign of the Cayenne GTS factory street:

And also a fake map of German region with a (not so) subtle GTS formed from roads.

They do have good marketing, that's for sure. "Why adopt a highway when you can own the road."

Should I expect the sign if I have a cayenne? TOo the other poster talking about the E46 m3, I was not making my comment towards you. It was towards others comparing the cayenne to much cheaper SUVs and saying they both offer the same value.

I guess, but I think they lose a ton of business on that too. Yeah, I'm a bit skeptical of the new look as well. I'm sure the new appearance of the STI's will send people rocketing to the new EVO.
I know I'm probably in the minority, but the appearance of the new STi has me considering selling my s2k for one.

Is there a way to sign up so I can receive those also?
First, get more money than brains... (I forget who posted that, but I thought it was funny)

And to oneboy2c, I don't know. I think I got it because my lease ended and I turned it in. So maybe the sign was to lure me back?

And rai, I get your point about the M3, but once I replaced the perf tires on the Cayenne it was fabulous in the snow and totally comfortable in hard rain. I'm not sure the M3 would pass that test. But of course that test is a very part time one.

agree. I drive S2000 or Legacy or MDX all on winter tires and no question the S2000 is the slippery one. but the M3 has more weight and longer wheelbase and traction and stability and M-Diff should be better than the S2000 by a long way.

I do not love driving the S2000 in the rain but I do it no prob and the M3 probably is a pussy cat in the rain and stable in the HW all day long.

Snow is something but I get like 5 days a year and it's mostly cleared.. I mean the police cars are Crown VIcs so I imagine it's not an issue whatsoever for a M3 on winter tires except for deep snow which we don't get much and I do have Legacy and MDX already.

I'll believe that when I see some on the road. Still about a 100 to 1 in favor of SUV's on the street. Will it change in the future, I hope so. I loved driving my family's Prius. The design was great.
There must still be a lot of SUV in LA area then.

In the Bay Area, the SUV/Truck crase has really died down. At the peak, there was probably 75% of SUV/Truck on the road during commutes. Now, it is more like 25%.... with so many Prius around town it looked like a geek invasion. Thinking certainly has changed a lot around here. But of course, Bay Area usually leads the nation in change.

I love my wife's Prius, it is like a mini-wagon. Just wish it could be a little bigger though.

How did a Cayenne come to be compared against an M3? Rai is the only person I could possibly imagine cross-shopping these cars!

It doesn't fit your needs, my needs, or many others', but it's become a cash cow for Porsche, so it's hard to argue against its success.
