Cayenne GTS

Whats the point of buying a $70k porsche SUV to drive on a paved road 99.9% of the time, other than to show that you have more money than brains? There are far better performing vehicles for that money.

Those of you complaining about this don't get the point. Of course there are better performing vehicles for the money. Of course you can get two less expensive cars for the same price. As Chris S pointed out, the people who will buy this know that, but they have enough money to burn that they won't care.
Would I buy one? No way in hell. But that doesn't mean I don't feel a perverse desire to.

That is what the Audi sport wagon is designed to do, not SUV.
And BMW wagon too if they ever brought it over here.

Actually the Cayenne GTS for the person that drives regular streets 99.9% of the time makes the most sense. It is essentially a lowered pimped out Cayenne S with little ability off road, but in terms of SUV's will probably be one of the best handling ones ever made. For a person needing SUV space & wanting a stylish car, the GTS will definitely make a lot of sense. For $70K what other SUV has the looks, power, and ON road handling that this SUV will have ? Not BMW, not mercedes, not Audi, not Range Rover.

I guess, but I think they lose a ton of business on that too. Yeah, I'm a bit skeptical of the new look as well. I'm sure the new appearance of the STI's will send people rocketing to the new EVO. I personally love station wagons. In Europe that is all you saw. About 5% of the cars were SUV's. I'm sure that's a given as gas is $5-$7/gallon there. They make more sense than an SUV, but they are just not popular here, don't know if they ever will be....until gas goes to $5/gallon I guess.
Toyota is bringing the Venza this fall, and remodeled their Matrix with more characters. Mazda5 (really a wagon with minivan door) and Mazda3 are selling well, VW is bringing the VW jetta wagon back. Saab, Volvo, and Audi are adding more upscale wagon.
Why? Because they expect the SUV market to slow down soon. AAA is projecting $4/gal gas this coming summer. Don't know if it will happen, but certainly automobile companies and analyist are certainly bracing for more expensive gas to come soon.
for sure the US government created the SUV market here by CAFE standards on cars (less strict for SUVs and Trucks) as well as GG tax on cars (not trucks or SUVs) and tax subsidies for large-size SUVs (not cars or station wagons).
Its stupid to have a GG tax on one type of vehicle (M3, M5 etc.) but no GG tax on a Cayenne or FX45 just b/c they are SUVs.
No wonder the US is over run with PU-trucks and SUVs

I thought the idea of a 400hp 6-speed MT SUV was interesting til I saw (somewhere) it was starting at $70K.
I don't think $70k for the Porsche is ridiculous, at least it doesn't look like a brick on wheels. RR start at what $80k?
This Cayenne is not supposed to sway MDX buyers.
