I doubt that the gt500 is even on the vette's radar. You could give it a thousand horse power. The gt500 is a muscle car and the vette is a sports car. When a stang starts getting close in lap time, the guys at GM will start paying attention. As for right now, I'd agree with the first part of your statement that the Viper will likely have a lot of influence on the Z06/Zr1. IMO the viper/z06 are versions of the same car, where the viper is slightly more track biased, and the z06 is more street biased. Both do both well, but one is slightly faster, and the other is slightly more comfortable. I'd expect that trend to continue.

Unless something big happens, the Mustang is about 500-600lbs too heavy to be in this conversation. That said, I am a huge fan of every level mustang on sale right now. I believe that the stang lineup is as strong of stronger at each level now than it has ever been.
I agree the GT500 isn't even in the same echelon, but GM still isn't going to let any level of Mustang have a higher peak horsepower rating than their best Corvette, regardless of how little it truly matters.

Isn't there a version of the Super Snake that makes 750hp? I agree that in a perfect world the best vette would have more power than the best stang, but I'd settle for better power to weight.

yeah, the super snake already won the HP war, but I think it was fighting itself.

I'm just waiting until they get to 700 hp on the Corvette. With the LSX in the ZR1, it doesn't seem out of reach.

^ It's just not needed. Honestly I think that the car would be slower in most situations since it would be struggling even more to put the power down. Sort of having a set of Hoosiers (which I'd have if I had a Z06/zr1 and tracked it) it is already rather difficult to get the power down in the first few gears. Though with enough tire, the right compound and a good enough LSD, it would be silly fun to have a 700hp vette. I personally think that the only way that the Z06/ZR1 get any faster without compromising the street driving would be ACR style aero. At this point I don't think that there are any street cars pulling higher cornering forces without some sort of large-ish aero.
