Goodbye Saab

Shame, their cars were just getting appealing.
Shame, their cars were just getting appealing.
Not for me. Their cars were appealing 25-30 years ago when they really did march to a different drummer with upscale hatchbacks like the 900 and quirky design like ignition switches on the floor and turbo 4 bangers. GM sucked the life out of the brand and then chucked out the corpse with the garbage of "Bad GM". Koenigsegg, was in way over their head from the start. No, Saab deserves to die just like Oldsmobile, Pontiac, Hummer, Saturn, Mercury, and Plymouth. The market is overcrowded. These brands just didn't do enough to differentiate themselves with product and service to justify their existence. What really amazes me are the late model Saabs I see driving around southern CT where I live. I can't believe people kept buying these things for the last 5 years. Ugh, talk about rapid depreciation in a mediocre car.
I almost bought a failure Sabb 9-2X wagon back in 2004 instead of an STI. It really was a Subaru WRX Wagon with a better body, suspension, and more with a nicer interior. They were selling for $8k off MSRP at the time, which was cheaper then a WRX Wagon, yet better. Sabb was barely hanging on back then, trying anything to stay alive, and I'm surprised they lasted this long.
RIP Sabb.
RIP Sabb.

Let's be fair, GM didn't kill SAAB. SAAB needed GM because they were basically already screwed. The problem was GM bought SAAB with out a good plan. GM never forced SAAB to really fix their quality problems and apparently neither SAAB nor GM could figure out what to do to make SAAB continue to stand out. SAAB wasn't given enough money to make their own platforms yet their sales didn't deserve their own platforms. In the end GM pumped billions into SAAB yet got nothing in return. SAAB was given billions but didn't do enough with it. Of course this was during a time when GM should have been worried about fixing themselves (that seemed to get put off for another 10 years). GM didn't kill SAAB, they just held off the death for about 20 years.
The first saab that rolled off the line was a piece of sh-t, so was the last. They will not be missed. At least not by me anyway. Some of the worst vehicles i've ever had the displeasure of working on. Good riddance.
