My IS-F is nearly 4 years old and I'm hoping to have a job change in the next year.
I want to get back into a roadster because I live in the Phoenix area and can drive it 9 months out of the year with the top down and I really miss that aspect.
The two cars I'm considering right now are:
-new Boxster S
-new 991 GTS (when it arrives)

So, given that this is gonna be a DD and the wife drives small sedans, I'm going to be equipping either one pretty well so the BS would likely run $75k and the GTS god knows how much, probably $130k.
The new 991 GTS should be 430hp since the new power kit for the carerra s just became available.
I have no idea when the GTS will go on sale, but it will certainly be a longer wait than for a Boxster.
Either one, I'm considering checking off a bucket list item and taking delivery in Germany and driving the Ring and several other roads you see on Top Gear from time to time.
I can afford either of these cars no sweat, but honest I feel a little off thinking about a $130k car. It just seems crazy. At the end of the day, I'm going to drive it to work and back on the highway at 80mph and it will rack up 90% of the miles that way.
What do you guys think? $50-$60k worth it for the incremental performance and 911 experience? Or complete waste of money? I've ruled out the base and s models of the 911 because they just don't seem special enough to warrant the cost difference; GTS is where I start to consider it...

 

If it were me and money aint no thaaang, then without a doubt the 991 GTS is the way to go. But if your feeling "sensible" Im sure the boxster S would be no slouch either, the new ones are beautiful and Im sure would offer just as much of the porsche experience that youll ever get in your day to day drive.

 

New 911 S or 4s.

 

If you have the cash, then the big one.

If you have the less cash, then the small one.

If you even have to finance the small one, then buy a car you can afford.

Either way, until hyperinflation hits in a few years, $130K seems excessive for a depreciating asset. If 90% of my driving was going to be straight line highway in a desert, then I'd pick a Captain America Repli-Chopper and a german sedan (S5 cab or the mid size benz), or a '76 Caddy Eldorado Convert, nothing sucks up road like an old caddy.

 

Convertible or nothing imo, and I think the Boxster/Cayman is better than the Carrera. It provides a better layout and all the performance you need for almost half the cost.

Buying it just because"you have the cash"?

 

i was actually looking at cayman R's...for some reason, i fell in love with that car...i may get it for myself for a birthday present this year

 

991 GTS with PDK no questions! You only have a limited amount of time, use it!

 

For 130, I won't lie - I would start to look elsewhere for something.

 

Really, there's used Ferrari 360s for that money.

Were it I, I'd get a Cayman R and be done with it. Having owned an S2000 for a decade, I can't imagine driving top down in Phoenix any time of year. That sun would turn me into a lobster.

 

If I'm spending $130k on a Porsche, it's going to have a giant wing and some obnoxious color combo.
