The part I found the most interesting, and a point I have been making on these US v. Japanese threads for years (dislocates shoulder patting self on back), is the degree to which Toyota execs are REQUIRED to get out and talk to avegrage buyers and build what they want to buy.
I have always felt the US execs look back to the glory days of the 50's 60's and 70's and tried to modernize what was big then, not what people wanted now. Look forward not back.
Anywho, interesting read.

Wasnt Honda and Toyota on the same playing field not to many years ago? They apparently have more differences than similarities in their approach to the way they do business.

Did not look like it was going to fit in the subject box. Guess it would have fit.

It seems that selling rebadged Toyotas as Lexuses with fat profit margins really sent Toyota on its way.

he loves the spacebar, that's why he's not hitting it
What I find to be puzzling is that I see Honda as having as good a product in most cases and in some cases better. But Toyota has been far more successful at growth and sales. Dunno why.
Around here though it has been my limited experience that the Toyota salespeople were really good, and the Honda guys were tools. Toytota had high demand and low supply but at least they were nice about it. The Honda guys would always say "Do you want to buy one off a shipping invoice without driving it or are you wasting my time?" or "If you don't want to pay over sticker than I don't want to talk to you."
I personally have heard at least 10 stories of people all set to buy a Honda and went to one particular dealer only to leave pissed post haste and either buy from another Honda dealer or pick another make entirely.

You know, I wonder exactly when Toyota started to blow up so much. I can only guess it was in the 90's, after the success of Lexus and the ugly redesign of the rounded Ford Taurus.
