Could Hyundai pass Toyota in sales this year?
It seems crazy, but looking at two predictions this guy made the claim - http://www.cnbc.com/id/42800280
Basically, with the earthquake disrupting Japanese production, and with Hyundai's strong sales, we could see Toyota sales dip as low as 6.3m sales, and Hyundai's (with Kia) rise to as much as 6.3m.

Not happening. Hyundai is already have supply issues with some of their cars. Boosting production that much is virtually impossible.
Additionally, "adding" Kia to Hyundai doesn't make sense, considering that Hyundai does not own more than 50% of their shares. They report sales independent of each other each month, as well, so obviously they are not "the same company" in the way that Honda/Acura and Toyota/Lexus are.

I think it's different in other countries as far as company x owning company y. In America, it may be 50% of their shares, but in Japan, I believe it's only 33.3%. That's why Ford had control over Mazda for a while with only 34% and Toyota has control over Subaru. I'm pretty sure Toyota does not own 50% of Subaru.
Someone correct me if I'm wrong.

I think you're mixing up what usually constitutes a controlling stake and ownership. Control of a publicly traded company, in many cases, is virtually guaranteed with less than 50% of shares when it comes to making corporate decisions (in American or anywhere else). Ownership is definitely not achieved with less than 50% because, theoretically, all the shareholders could overrule your decisions.

our hyundai entourage had 195+k miles before it got totaled. only 2 major problems. 1. power steering went out around 175k and never fixed it, 2. A/C compressor went out around 150k ($600 fix). NEVER CHANGED original spark plugs, water pump, even coolant and tranny fluid. i only did engine oil change. for these reasons and being cheaper than japanese minivans with less options we bought kia sedona. since it is our work van so we purchased stripped down version but still included blutooth connection and ipod connection.
go check out kia sedona.
