E90 M3, 997 Carrera S, or 987 Cayman S
So I am about to pull the trigger on one of the three as a fun weekend 3rd car that I can occasionally take to the track. I have an E90 328 M-sport as a daily and a track focused S2k that is awesome on the track, but not great for much else. I decided I wanted a fun 3rd car that I could take my daughter to school in on nice days and take to cars and coffee on the weekends. Occasionally I may take it instead of the S2k to the track. Initially I started off @ a $25k Cayman S budget, but then a friend offered a great deal on an 05 911 2S. This got me considering the value of 4 seats for going around with the family. That said even a great deal is beyond my budget and has me a bit stretched in the “fun money” department. So then I was thinking maybe an E90 M3. I am really looking for something that I could enjoy for a year or two and then sell without risk of loosing much $. I really feel that the 911 might be the answer and if that was the case I wouldn’t mind stretching a bit. That said it needs tires and brakes, which are going to set me back $3k outta the gate.
Any my thoughts on these three from an investment potential (least chance of loosing $ through cost of ownership/depreciation)?

987 Cayman S is the most fun and enjoyable to drive car on your list IMO. I've driven all three and the 987 is a slightly faster, more composed, and more comfortable S2k with way more feel.

Which is my thoughts as well and the price is right where I want to be. The biggest downside is no back seats! As far as driving experience though it won’t be a full race prepped S2k, but on the street it won’t be a full race prepped S2k!

I'd go for the 911. I think you'll regret not picking the 911 if you went with Cayman and back seat is good to have.

A 911 is the best bet if fighting depreciation is the goal, but unless your family is 4 people with dwarfism, the back seats are pretty much useless and any kids riding in the back are gonna arrive with headaches. You can get kids back and forth to school but it is not a GT car for trips with the kids. I thought about a 911 so the wife and I could take the dog with us, but it is not a car we would take any humans in the back if we cared about their comfort. And then, my 981 has a pretty low pitch rumble that sounds a bit drony and that is with the sports exhaust set to closed. I think it would even give a dog severe headaches sitting right on top of the engine.
I'd pick a Cayman but I am biased. The M3 is a nice car too, just be aware of it's gas mileage reputation going in, otherwise it is a great car.

I have a 6yr old and she is small. The furthest trips would be 1hr maybe 2 with lots of stops.
I really like the potential investment value of the 997, but I could see the last year NA M3 doing well or even the cheaper performance value Cayman doing well.

Just make sure to get a full PPI including scoping of the cylinders. I watched over the past 1.5 years the value of the 997.1's drop substantially. My dad bought one and went to sell it 1.5 years later and lost a lot of money on it. It never held value.

you like your bmw, you will like the m3. that's what i would do....later you can opt for the porsche, now you can use that extra space for the m3, eventually perhaps selling the 328?

Very true, I really do think I would like it. But my only hesitation is I really would feel like I am driving my 328 until I get on the gas. I have driven them and interior is darn close and the driving experience is just dialed up a notch. The gas pedal is the difference!
