Ya and when free maintenance period over then what? What if you want car long term?
Go look at reliability of the 2002 BMW 7 series and other BMW model coming off warranty. One friend 02 BMW 7 series is now a nightmare. He has to waste time from busy job to go to mechanic. You stuck with horrible junky car that sits in mechanic shop most of the time.
Avoid BMW and Benz. You think you might have showoff car but everyone and their mommy has one. I see more BMW and Benz than civic and accord in los Angeles. And if you keep it longtime you will be sorry. As free maintenance period over you will be driving around from mechanic shop to mechanic shop.

my 1997 e36 m3 runs flawlessly with 114k on the odo. i have the ENTIRE service history for the car. no major problems at all. and now a 114k and 11yrs old its still a great car the delivers great performance.
this is true of the E30/E36/E34/E39 and MANY other series of BMW made over the last 25yrs.
its not smart to own ANY car outside of a warrenty, and yes a plain jane honda/toyota is going to cost you less to own over the years, but its not like a used bmw is going to cost THAT MUCH more.

how about the porsche Cayman S? Have anyone heard of issues with it after warranty?
Chris S, you have a Cayman, right? What are your impressions?

Reliable, Luxury, and High Performance are mutually exclusive at best. The NSX is probably the only car I can think of in recent history that has all those qualities.
With the economy and gas prices alot of people are selling their cars in general. You could probably find a nice copy -- take your time in do your research though, as always.

-> I do agree some people here, on the short term (like 3 years) the Bimmer brothers [E82/certified E46/E90] are the best bet. But if you go beyond that, the G35/G37 are way better.
-> I would like a E46 330Ci M-Sport, but I forsaw the maintenance of the Bimmie, and I said ,'Um, no'.

I had a 04 VW R32...
It was SUPER plush on the inside. HAndled like a dream and had PLENTY of power.
The oil changes were cheap at the dealership. The only thing else that may be costly was the Haldex AWD service... but i did it myself. took all but 10 minutes and less then $100.
Performance upgrades were a little costly... but I got an EIP race exhaust for $750 shipped and the car was the closes thing to a friggin F1 car on the streets... The sound was nothing i have ever heard before.
