EVO vs STi vs Mazdaspeed3

your going to spin in an evo or sti if your pushing it too...
The ms3 can do all the commuting you need, and do it arguable more comfortably with more room.

The ENTIRE point of the wet argument is NOT WHETHER OR NOT IT CAN COMMUTE BUT CAN YOU STILL HAVE FUN IN IT!
Performance cars are bought to... PERFORM. When a FWD performance car, or RWD performance car encounter rain, the fun switch goes OFF, PERIOD.
People BUY performance cars for the fun switch, be it to drive fast to the speed limit, take a turn hard etc. It is wet or snowy at LEAST 50% of the year hear. So when buying a performance car, a SERIOUS issue is HOW much you can actually use the fun! Hence why Vettes, M3's, Porsches and Convertible markets are TEN times larger in Florida, Texas, Cali... People would rather spend the money and use the car for what it was made for.
More room? really? I'm so sick of hearing this hatch shit, more room. How much god damn room do you need?! EVO has 4 doors, seats 5 and has a good sized trunk. I think people who buy a hatch for fold down seats, or for the extra 3 cubic feet of space are high, unless you are moving out of a house everyday who cares.
Value:
The EVO and STi will only sink so low, then the prices will come to a stop...
1997-99 Eclipse GSX for example. $24,000 new... they dropped a bit, but even a 1999 with 60,000 miles on it will still fetch $12-14,000 easily in good shape. The market has been that way for that car for the past 5 years.
A mazdaspeed3 will continue to drop, the EVO just has too much going for it to sink too low. It is already a ridiculous bargain. It was a ridiculous bargain brand new.

Where was your MS3 when there was 2ft of snow here and ALL FWD and RWD vehicles were stuck? My FWD and RWD cars couldn't even drive a few feet, but my AWD vehicle climbed everything without a problem. Thank God for my AWD vehicle; otherwise, I would've had to stay at home just like almost everybody else. But my AWD vehicle carried me to work and other errands without a problem, when all other 2WD vehicles were absolutely stuck.
Yes, FWD is fine for mild situations, but ultimately, AWD has much more grip no matter how you look at it. It's really simple, 4 wheels grabbing the pavement have more grip than 2 wheels grabbing the pavement, which in turn, have more grip than no wheels grabbing the pavement.
The same principle applies to Rally racing. 4 wheels grabbing the dirt have more traction than 2 wheels.

ive driven through some serious weather in my FWD (and other peoples RWD) cars without issue because im not an idiot and would have proper snow tires equipped.
but to the other guy.....I sincerely doubt an EVO MR would beat any Gallardo in any conditions.
oh believe me I hear yah, there are lots of times that I wish I had AWD.
just the way some people talk about AWD they think its magic or something. FWD, RWD, and AWD all have 4 wheels and tires on the ground to turn the car with and to brake with, its not as simple as just saying 4 > 2. People that think AWD helps you stop FTL. On many of the really bad days on the highways up here its actually big SUV's you see in the ditch that have rolled over, not the small FWD compacts.

EDIT.... didnt see his budget was 17k..
but to the people above
yellow s- I never said I live in snowy conditions. I said I've lived in texas. It doesn't take enstein to figure out its a little different. I will say I have been through the worst of the worst rain wise. I never claimed it would have 2 ft of snow. I don't think an evo would even handle that without the roads being cleared and salted. I do however know plenty of people that have ms3's with decent tires (like budgy mentioned) in chicago that do just fine.
11past9- you're still missing my point. You guys need to have a much better defined idea of what you want to do with this car, how long it's going to last, and how much your going to pay for it. Every basic engineering problem has requirements before you can even begin to think abotu a solution. I mean, you can't solve it if you don't know what you want. Your taking kind of an immature approach to the situation. You can't just say sti vs evo vs ms3. For one, they are in very different price brackets so cross shopping them is meh at best. used vs new. I pick new for daily, used for fun... lIm not saying the ms3 is better. I am saying you are clearly biased towards the evo/sti. Maybe you're from the evo forums, who knows.
