Gear
No one has mentioned Scorpion helmets!!! They are the best value helmets out there. Great vents, anti-fog shield, and teriffic fit. Try one on.
Also, for best prices on gear, go to newenough.com and check the closeout section. They don't carry Scorpion, though.
Don't trust just my word on Scorpion helmets? Do some research. Best helmets out there for the price as far as I'm concerned. I bought an Exo-400 for $140.

Lots of riders seem to like the Scorpion Exo 400 and 700's.
Arai is Japanese. Several of the cheaper helmet brands are Korean and their quality seems to be fine. I just bought a KBC Force RR that seems as well made, perhaps better, as my Arai at half Arai's price (with wicked-cool graphics on it).

I'm pretty sure the Scorpions are from China, but that's no knock on them. They're sweet helmets. Google up some reviews if you're interested. I have mine right next to me and the quality is great. DOT and Snell approved.
looking for a different helmet, maybe this? i cant say for the quality, only preference i would have would be to keep the helmet weight low. about a year back there was a few articles about how the safety rating tests were performed.
In regards to helmets. There is a pretty good article in motorcyclist featuring tests on protectiveness. The article is called "blowing the lid off". I would link it but I dont know how. so just google it. The gist of the article is that a more expensive helmet does not always mean better protection. In fact one of the cheapest helmets in the test performed the best. I believe it is because of the differences in standards between the DOT and SNELL requirements. Anyway this article is a must read for anyone looking to buy a new helmet. I myself have two Arai's but for me this had more to do with graphic choices on the helmet. I really wanted two particular ones...The green Nakano and the yellow Edwards.
