Maybe, but consider that Detroit cannot count it's imports which have better mileage in with the vehicles produced here...

Thats a fair point. I would argue that makers like gm could have put more money into developing their own fuel efficient cars instead of buying them from Toyota or Korea on the cheap, but your point is valid none the less.
