I have a 2001.5 S4. At 28K miles the clutch went. I'm the second owner so I don't know how the original owner drove the car. So far the car has been reliable exept for a few minor things like leaking hoses and by-pass vavles. Replace those and you shouldn't run in to many other problems as long as you don't beat the car everyday. Make sure you pay the extra money to buy audi assured, it's worth it. For major problems the turbos tend to die if you don't take care of them with synthetic oils, or turbo timer. The syncros are weak so don't plan on launching it hard on a daily basis. The car is solid. The interior is made of the best materials and feels very stout. The frame is stiff and nothing shakes or sweeks. Overall a nicely built car with issues if you don't know how to take care of it.

Go 01 or newer to avoid the leaks, great cars, do what bpu tells you.

what about modability? i don't have much expierence with vw/audi turbos, do they respond well to ecu mods and the like?

Thinking of maybe trading the S in for one, i need a lil luxury in my life and i love that nogaro blue they come in.

The biturbo v6 S4 is the freaking poster-boy for moddability. There are tons of options for chipping pretty much any VW engine, and there are some seriously sick S4's running around with ginormous turbos.
