Hatchbacks: which is best?
I'd prefer an EK as well. I owned a 96 hatch for about 2.5 years as one of my first daily drivers. Finding an EG that's not either a clean heavily modified version, a complete POS, or stock, clean, and too expensive, is very difficult these days. You can still find clean EK hatches for sale by original owners without too much trouble.
The EK is significantly roomier and IMO handles better, but the above poster is right, mine barely cranked out over 110hp.
Just FYI, the gearing in my dx was extremely* high. 1st was 40+, 2nd was mid 70's, and the car just about topped out in 3rd around 115. This makes gas mileage very good [better than any car in its class today] and it's pretty fun to drive letting the gears wind out, even with no tach.
In my younger days, I would cruise at about 110-115 to the other side of houston late at night 3-4 times a week. This is on the beltway, probably the best maintained expressway in Texas with -0- traffic. It's still not something I'd do today or recommend to anyone. The car was very driveable at those speeds and would get 35+mpg, no kidding.
I absolutely beat the $hit out of that car in every way you can imagine. I never modified it but that car was undoubtedly the most durable car I have ever owned. It was totaled at 96k miles, I bought it when it had a little over 50k. I drove it so hard I had the entire front suspension replaced at 86k miles because the mounts were destroyed as were the struts. I did it myself with OEM parts for under 500. I launched the car a conservative 1,000 times on the street and track, autocrossed it for hundreds of hours, the list goes on. I red lined it thousands of times as well. The engine and transmission never even blinked. It still had the stock clutch on it as well. The crash occured while I was driving down I-45 in Houston when a MB CLK managed to get airborne and land on my hood, while I was going about 65 minding my own business. I didn't even get scratched and actually drove the wrecked POS home almost 30 miles. It was totaled because the insurance would only claim it was work like 5500, what a joke; I think it's worth about that much today and this was 5 years ago.
I wouldn't hesitate to buy a <100,000 mile EK hatch that was driven half way sanely and expect to use it relatively problem free for another 5-10 years.

WOW. That sounds pretty awesome. What type of engine was in that thing that you got that kind of mileage, cause I would consider keeping one of those stock instead of a B18 or B16 swap.
Also, is there anyone out there with stories of EG's?

I've owned two EGs (bought one in CA, took it to NY, sold it when I moved to Boston, and came across another clean EG when I moved back to CA 6 yrs ago). I'll preface this: I don't have any experience with the EK.
I have a '92 Si, as was my previous one (125 hp). It's very easy to find replacement parts, mods, etc. It's very useful as a h/b (I've stuffed lots of stuff in there, including a full size futon - and frame!). I haven't had any mech probs with it (the only currently probs I've come across has been that on rare occassion my sunroof leaks a tiny bit, and about once a month it wont start, but I think it's due to my grounding kit - if I wiggle all the wires it starts right up).
It is underpowered, esp in comparison to today's cars, When you turn on the a/c, you know it's on - not because of the coolness in the cabin, but because you've lost even more power. Still, I easily get 30mpg on regular gas. It leans horribly in corners, but stops decently.
It does dent easily and the plastic parts fade. Conversely they're easy to work on too. The cabin is relatively quiet, even at higher speeds.
I love my EG, and sadly will likely sell it soon. I have to say that it has been one of my favorite cars - a nice mix of practicality and just a tad of sportiness.
I'm not sure about pricing on the vehicles, and the EG is getting long in tooth (mine is 'low' mileage at 114k!), but it still runs without a problem.

I thought about the CRX , but even those are just TOO old for my tastes. The EGs look great if I could find a clean one or one that hasn't been riced to death, but both hatches also offer more room for passengers and cargo.
