This is very good news. We discussed this in my geology class just last week. I'll have to forward my professor that article!

And how is this impractical? Natural gas comes into most homes anyway, putting a machine in your HOUSE that refuels your car for you is certainly more practical than DRIVING to a gas station to fill up!

With limited range you have to be VERY careful.. if you run out it is probably tow time. Not very practical in my book.

IMO natural gas is probably the perfect alternative fuel for the short and medium term. I'm glad to see honda being the first company with an economical solution that anyone can buy and use.

Hydrogen is the perfect fuel for the long term, but it will only be economical when catalysts that break down water can cheaply be manufactured. Water breaks down naturally, but very slowly (heat facilitates the process of breakdown). Chemical catalysts are out there that speed up the process at normal temps.

CNG may be possible, but difficult, in California. In Texas with 7% of the area in the US (over 250,000 square miles) I see all of 34 refuel stations for the state. There are numerous towns 300 or more miles away from a place to refuel. It appears to me that this is only practical for limited use in two cities in Texas. It some other states it is even less practical.

that is unless you lease or buy a PHIL station for your garage.

inter-city travel over 300 miles round trip is out, though
