having driven an elise in the snow i can confirm that it's not a winter car. The heater can't clear the ice off the inside of the screen so you have to leave 15min or so for it to fully heat up before moving off, once under way it sits on the snow and has laughable traction, mate crashed his the first time it snowed. Getting winter tyres for my S2K and hope it's a bit better.

The Elise is just about the most unprepared car for winter. You gonna drive something with essentially an uncarpeted interior in the winter? Are you nuts? Aluminum boxes don't retain heat well in icy conditions.

You're going to want something with a cloth interior for sure. Besides, who'd want to treat a great track car to the rigors and abuse of slush, salt, dirt, snow, sand, etc.?

I would never own a Lotus as a daily driver or my only car. A friend owns a late model Esprit and it's constantly breaking down. It's in the shop every month. A couple of other people I know are Lotus afficianados and own various models but their cars are constantly in the shop as well. Ferrari is not the only marque that has outrageous maintenance costs. Unless Lotus clearly demonstrates that their quality has improved, owning a Lotus as your only car is asking for lots of frustration.

Well, they have a Toyota engine now, so if they've quit using Lucas electrical systems things might be better.

Screw the only car thing.
Just get an Elise with some LM-22's, and buy a $500 Tercel for the really snowy days when some git wants to re-end you.
