clutch disc + pressure plate $1K

I guess they're taking the approach of luring you in w/ great perceived value on the front end, w/ the hope of making it up in over-priced parts? Even Porsche isn't that greedy on their parts pricing!
I'm also curious why your friend even looked these up? Why does it matter if the flywheel is valued at 3K right now? You have a 10/100,000 warranty. If your friend voided his warranty, whos fault is that? Do you think in 8-10 years it will still be 3K? I'll give you a hint, no. They're just charging premiums for people who voided the warranty, which is fine in my book.

Your post reads like you think it's a crime to do anything that would void the warranty! Just b/c somebody wants to mod their car doesn't mean they s/b bent over if they need to pay for parts on their own dime. Also, the 10/100 warranty is NOT transferable, so used buyers aren't covered there.

As to other questions:
- yes, I'm aware you can buy parts cheaper elsewhere
- no, the prices don't include labor
- I have no idea why my friend was looking up parts prices
- I quoted MSRP prices b/c that's what I was told.

I just thought it would make an interesting (and different) Car Talk topic, that's all...

No my point is that any intelligent human being should go about doing the research weighing the pro's and cons of making a decision like voiding the warranty; that carefree action like that comes with its price. If you're not smart enough to do your research and securing that you will be ok without a warranty, then you shouldn't bitch about the cost just because you were too haphazard to live in the real world. Same goes with buying a used car, you should weigh maintenance costs on them especially when not under warranty. If you are too stupid to measure the full economic responsibility of said vehicle, then you have zero room to bitch about associated costs.

Using your brain instead of playing dumb and complaining about the system, goes a long way.

I think parts on newer cars are generally expensive though - someone told me a wiper blade for the new Accord costs $30 at the dealer. I think its the way new cars work - parts are expensive early on but drop as the cars age.

When I had my center console replaced under warranty, the bill was $700 for the part! Maybe high prices are a way that automakers keep customers from not going to the dealers for warranty service?

So, by your logic, nobody ever has the right to complain about anything. Because they should have done the research and made their decision with all the facts right from the start. Not having all the facts just means you made your decision prematurely. Not being aware you didn't have all the facts and weren't aware of all the risks is no reason to complain.

IOW, anyone who ever experiences an unforseen event, financial or otherwise, is just too stupid to live in the real world, right?

I would also bet that over time the price of those parts will drop, the vehicle is pretty new, most of which will be in a long warranty, whose parts arent interchangeable, etc. But yeah, pretty steep, but the usual consumeables are priced normally. So everyone can relax.
