all depends on your insurance and what event you are doing. I think in general insurance companies will cover (then drop you, or charge you a zillion $ the next year) your on track wreck if it was a "class" or drivers school with instructors, etc.....
A time trial would not be covered by any insurance unless you lie about it (insurance fraud).
A couple of guys totaled their cars at summit point and both somehow got the insurance to pay because it was not officially "racing".
