I am considering going over to the local techincal college and taking some auto courses. I want to know the basics of auto engines; how they work. I am the sort of person who likes to know how things work. All of you out there who are mechanics or engine savvy, will these classes give me what I am looking for, or do you have to practice the trade to really understand?

Go for it.......I think you will learn a lot if it's something that interest you. My stepson is actually going to "adult school" and is learning the exact same thing. He's learned quite a bit in 1 month and they are already "hands-on" with the engines.
