If you are considering SUVs I'd suggest a Jeep Cherokee (I have a 96 as a beater / hauler of crap). You could get a pretty nice one for 6-7K. They are well known for being reliable and the engine can go to 200,000 miles easy if well taken care of.

if you need something with lots of room to haul crap i would say get an old Bronco or Cherokee.
if you just need a beater to get you from point A to B then you have a wide variety of cars to chose from.
these would be pretty fun to play with and can be purchased for under $5K:
5th gen Civic hatch
Nissan 240sx (S13)
Toyota Supra turbo (MKIII)
Mazda RX-7 turbo (2nd gen)
Ford Mustang 5.0 LX (fox body)

I'd go for a newer Mazda Protege. They are very reliable and fun to drive as far as econo cars are concerned. I'll probably be replacing my Ford Contour with one within the next year or so.

Integra GS-R is fun- you still get a crazy redline and great handling. It's a slug compared to an S2000, but it seats four in a pinch, turns into a pickup when you fold the rear seat down, and it's reliable and gets decent gas mileage.
Only problem is insurance, and the wealth of aftermarket parts can be kind of tempting.
