I read www.rx8club.com for months, because the RX-8 was the main contender for me. Well, until I found a good deal on a used S2000 that is

I loved the styling of the 8, the handling prowess (which everyone agreed was awesome), and I thought the price was good. Well, the price for stripper model anyways, the optioned out models are horrible ripoffs.

To get to the point here: I've never seen a RX-8 trap higher then 95mph, and that was from a great driver, Judge Ito! He also broke his transmission, or something, what, twice doing that?

Most examples of RX-8 owners going to the track results in mid 15 second times, with traps from 89 to 92 mph. The S2000 would dominate the RX-8 in a straight line.

Now, again, Canzoomer's supposed ECU mod should level the playing field somewhat, but the only runs I've seen by ECU mod owners are G-Tech times.

And while the G-Tech may be consistent, it is not accurate.

 

i hope the rx-8 dies, no future for the next rx-7. long live the FD

The skidpad test is simply a measure of lateral grip -- they drive the car around a circle of known diameter as fast as they can, time it, then derive from the time and diameter how many lateral Gs (e.g. how much grip) the car was generating.

As part of this exercise, some magazines also subjectively evaluate how much the car oversteers or understeers while lapping the skidpad, but this doesn't provide any insight into, for example, how the car would behave in transitional maneuvers or when adding in throttle or brake inputs. For that reason it's not a good metric for evaluating overall handling.

The thing about handling is that it's subjective -- it can't be numerically measured like acceleration. Furthermore, different people like different things; one person's perfectly neutral car will be another person's oversteering monster. This information can't be derived from track test numbers.

I ripped a six-speed RX8 around a short autocross course at the Mazda Rev It Up event. It was actually a pretty sweet handler and the motor felt good, very smooth, no vibration at all all the way to the rev limiter just north of 9000rpm. The motor felt alright, I think it would make a good daily driver, it wasn't fast by any stretch, but it wasn't slow either.

Overall, it's a good package, but for the money, I'd look at an Evo or Sti, even an R32.
