I have not driven the 07 MCS with the turbo motor but my supercharged version works just dandy....
I'm on my 3rd MINI which is an 06 Cooper S JCW (John Cooper Works) with the 06-only Checkmate package, 06-only factory JCW package with front brakes (up 15%), LSD, and engine tuning kit (210hp). I absolutely love it - fantastic car with great handling and power . The MINI is my daily driver as I put about 50 miles a day on it. Good gas mileage but not quite as good as the base Cooper. The interior is beautiful and very functional in my opinion and I can carry 4 people comfortably. The materials I've used to build my deck railings went into the MINI.......granted I had them cut at Lowe's but still!
The handling is not as razor sharp as the S2000 but it's much more tossable and the sharpness can be fixed with tire and suspension upgrades. Between my 02 Cooper, 03 Cooper S JCW, and 06 Cooper S JCW (about 80K combined miles), I've had virtually no problems save for burned out fog and reverse lights and some hood insulation rubbing on the S models. Not a good car for winter unless you swap out the tires for real winter rubber....
The only real downfalls to the car are soft paint (get clear bra!) and a ride that is on the stiff side (replace run-crap tires with non run-crap performance rubber). Supposedly the ride issue was fixed on the 07s since the 1st gen cars were never designed around run-flat tires in the first place........it was a last-minute change by BMW.

my uncle did alot of R&D for many of the bolt ons for the Gen 1's, including most of the suspension kits, and the KN intake system for the 1.6SC's. he still has a SC S and it fully BPU, make about 197whp, but its a bit porky going pound for pound with my s2k, its rite at 2800lbs wet. and as the other owners mentioned, it a BLAST to drive, mini cobra SC wine is fun too. i would pick one up, but call my shallow, the fisher-price interior just annoys the hell outta me. its retarded that the guy 6 cars back can read my speedo clearly.
overall its a car for me.

i cannot speak for the regular "S", but I did have th chance to drive my buddies John Cooper Works S (2005) and that car was nasty. Before I drove that model, I thought thye were merely cute as well. I loved it.
I think that has 205 or 210 hp!

My buddy just bought one. I got to drive it while in Houston last week. It's pretty cool, but it's tiny. It would mean we would pretty much have to use the van whenever going anywhere with the kid. An emo doesn't cost much more and is much more useful. It's is cute though..if that's your thing.

I test drove the '07 MCS and was surprised how well it handled.
Brakes were wonderful just like any other BMWs, and the interior was nice IMO.
It indeed is a fun car to drive.
I kinda like the new clubman too.
