LOL, for some reason people always think that Denver is a snowy place. In reality, we only have 3-4 real snow storms every year. By the next day, the snow is typically melted.

A 4-runner 4WD will handle better in the snow than any 4-wheel drive car.
Also, the 4-runner was listed in the top 10 for reaching >200K .

The same attributes that make vehicles handle well on dry roads apply in wintery conditions too. The lighter car with the lower center of gravity would offer the best winter weather handling and stopping.
Now if you need to regularly drive through unplowed roads with 10"+ of snow on them, then the truck, with its superior ground clearance is the better option. But on normal, treated winter roads, an Impreza will turn better and stop better than a heavier truck. And the car will get much better fuel economy to boot.
If you are talking about Denver, consider paying a premium to get a WRX over an NA Impreza. The turbo engine's power will be less effected by the altitude than the NA version.

How do you figure that a 4000lb truck will outhandle a 2800lb car?

And as you mentioned, driving in the hills through unplowed territory may be the only advantage the 4-runner has.
